When one is suffering from acne, it is very necessary to follow the right acne diet. You as a teenager must have heard your mother or granny say umpteen times that oily food must be avoided in order to control acne. Many a times, we dismiss these ideas as old wives tales and tend to ignore them.
However, scientists have found a concrete relationship between diet and acne. Professors from Australia's RMIT University have spent over two years in finding a relation between the changes in glucose and insulin levels in the body and the subsequent changes in the skin due to them.
The professors at Australia's RMIT University found that the carbohydrates that are high in glycemic index act as a major triggering factor that leads to a severity of acne. These high glycemic index carbohydrates shoot up the levels of glucose and insulin in the blood. The skin reacts to these increased levels by eruption of acne.
The professors also found that a diet rich in protein and low glycemic carbohydrates improves the severity of acne and helps reduce further acne eruptions.
One can make out from these findings that if an acne breakout has to be controlled, one should go in for diet that is rich in protein and has low glycemic index. Fried foods, sugary drinks, white bread, oily food, potato chips, etc. all come under a high glycemic food category. All these foods have low fiber content and low protein levels. This food category is also popularly known as "teenage" diet. This is the food category that should be strictly avoided at all times if one wishes to control acne actively.
One can go in for whole wheat bread instead of opting for white bread. Pizzas and burgers can be substituted with pasta. Traditional pasta is generally cooked with lots of vegetables that would provide the essential fiber. They are also cooked in olive oil that is healthy for the body. Hence, a healthy acne diet may not always equal a distasteful one. One can easily play around with the right combination of food and fruits to keep the body's glycemic levels under control.
So, can a right acne diet do the trick? Proper diet is the way towards healthy eating habits that would show results in reduction of acne over time. However, one cannot expect to be 100% free of acne because of this.
A right acne diet is a way of living that leads you towards not only getting a clear shiny skin, but also a healthy body.
